Small-scale operations face charges of 50,000 kyats, while larger, heavy machinery-driven enterprises are burdened with a hefty fee of 1,000,000 kyats.

Deforestation has run rampant, streams have become contaminated with mining waste, and access to water for farming has become increasingly scarce.
