The people of Tharyar Kone Village of Hpakant Township were forcibly displaced for jade mining

Tharyar Kone Village forced to relocate for jade mining

In the beginning of 2020, villagers were forced to move out from their village by the order from KIO headquarter in Hpakant Township to mine for jade in Tharyar Kone village. There has been no compensation to the villagers. Tharyar Kone village has about 1000 households and after being forcibly displaced, they are facing many difficulties according to reported by Hpakant resident.

With the order from the KIO headquarter of Hpakant Township, they continue operating gold mining despite villagers disagreeing and opposing. Villagers have submitted a complaint letter to KIO headquarter, but there has been no response related matter and the mining operations continue in the areas. It is reported that the pavement collapsed due to jade mining. The military council collected tax 30 Lakh per vehicle.

On 29 December 2022, two local young people from Lone Khine village tract from Maw Zizar, Hpakant, who were on their way by motorbike to Sut Aung, Inn Ma Chaung, Mar Sar Chaung to collect data. They were caught by KIA recruitment group near 111 Company and they were taken away by KIA along with their phone and money confiscated. Currently, they have been rescued but their phone and money were not returned. According to Hpakant women leader, new phone will be bought for those two people.

Living in uncertainty life

It was learnt from local people that the internet was cut off in Hpakant Township, it is very difficult to get information in timely. It is not safe to report the information and share the information.
